I just spotted this CCN article about a pair of guys that claim to have come across a community of Bigfoot (bigfeets?). They found the body in the woods and saw several others that were still alive. So they took the body back and stuck it in a freezer. Scientists are performing tests to determine the origin of the creature.

You may have heard of the One Laptop Per Child project, but what you may not be aware of is that these laptops are environmentally friendly and extremely well made. The batteries for instance, biodegrade into fertilizer (yes, fertilizer) and have a lifetime that's 4x longer than standard laptop batteries. A Couple Collaboration Tools

I was perusing around this weekend and stumbled upon a couple Internet services that look pretty slick.

The first is a group chat service called Campfire. It enables a group to collaborate online in a shared chat session. Participants can share files, images, and code too. It's secure and there is no software to install. Transcripts of chat sessions are also available.

The second is a service called Slideshare for sharing presentations. You can post presentation slides and it automatically converts them into an online media presentation. If you don't have anything to post, you can easily spend hours watching the various presentations that are already out there.

A Great Place for Yard Stuff!

The place is called Best Buy in Town Landscape Supply. I originally found them when I lived out in Hillsboro and needed some mulch for my yard. After calling around, they had the best prices and the best service. Well, that was many years ago and as fate would have it, I found myself checking them out again recently. Prices are still great and the service is too! This time I actually visited their store off Cornelius Pass Road. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that they have EVERYTHING anyone could want to put together a nice yard landscape. They have barkdust, mulch, stones, soils, fountains, ponds, benches, boulders, bird baths, grass seed, sod, etc... Hopefully soon I be posting pictures of my (completed) yard projects. :)

Ken's Artisan Bakery

This morning I seized the opportunity to hit Ken's Bakery before dropping the kids off at school. Ken's is an awesome place to stop for pastry treats and loose-leaf tea. They also serve the most excellent Stumptown coffee and fresh made breads. I usually get tea there because it's high quality stuff served loose in a little ceramic tea pot. It makes me feel quite civilized. :) I simply can't bring myself to pay $2 (or more) for the store brand du jour tea bag that most other places serve. I suspect Ken's gets their tea from the Tea Zone just a few blocks away (another great NW Portland place). Did I mention the service is always good too! Sitting there with my kids and their pastries and my tea I discovered the flowers sitting on the table had also sparked an "it's almost spring" feeling in me. Whoo Hoo!

The "Digital Divide"

In recent years I have focused my tech skills towards making tech stuff easier for non-tech people to learn and use. This change came about as a result of bumping into highly intelligent individuals that simply have not been touched by the technology revolution. Most of these folks haven't delved into building a tech skill base because it arguably hasn't been able to help them with their daily grind. Typically, they are in industries that existed before computers started changing the world (i.e. lawyers, therapists, construction contractors, teachers, etc.).

However, I believe that now technology is seeping into every occupation. It is becoming more stable and easier for everyone to use. As tech seeps into traditionally non-tech fields, two groups of people without tech skills are surfacing. The first being people who would like to learn, but don't know how to get started. The second, are the naysayers. This second group of people are simply choosing to opt out of technology. This group is also getting smaller and smaller, and sadly, eventually the way the world communicates will be so integrated with technology innovations that these people's irrational fear of the idea of technology will render them unable to contribute.

Today I read an article on silicon.com that speaks of the digital divide. The divide refers to the gap between folks that have computers/Internet access and the people who don't. In the past, the latter was a fairly substantial group due to economic realities. As a result, businesses had to spend a substantial amount of money and time addressing the needs of the non-tech folks. However, times they are a changing. Very usable PCs now cost less than most home appliances (i.e. washing machine, refrigerator, tv, etc.). I believe as businesses come to the same realization as Peter Cochrane, they will simply stop providing services to the handful of folks that are simply opting out. At best, the folks that are opting out will have to shoulder the costs of building and maintaining inefficient systems required to service them.

I see this as an interesting look into human nature. I wonder if the technology naysayers will go so far as to form isolated communities. Hmm...

While I was taking one of our cats to get her shots at the Moreland Vet, I noticed more cylindrical objects poking out of the ground beside the street. In fact, this time there was a pair of them. I've lived in Portland my whole life, but I have never noticed these before. Also, it seems that they are unique to Sellwood.

Rounded Metal Ship

A few years back I went on an expedition to the Seattle area with my son's class. We stayed on Vashon Island and took the ferry over to Seattle each day. It was a fabulous trip. We did the Experience Music Project, Pike's Market, strolled the pier, etc... We also took a ride on a duck and during the water portion of our ride, I spotted this old metal ship.

Well the other day my family and I ventured up to the Olympic Peninsula and spied a mural with a picture of what I am guessing is this same ship (back when it wore a younger ship's hull).

I spent a few minutes on Google and was unable to readily turn up the story on this unique ship. Does anyone know its story?

Check out the 3-D Center in NW Portland

I ventured over to the 3-D Center on NW Lovejoy today. I had read about them in the Portland Tribune the other day and at $4 per person ($7 for a family!), it sounded like a great (if not necessary) thing to do.

The center is a not-for-profit that is pretty much run by volunteers. They have fantastic "stereoscopic" pictures (3-D) and artifacts. They are currently showing a 3-D movie about fluid droplets and the images are truly spectacular, stunning, amazing, wonderous, .... They used milk and water with colored droplets, as well as solid objects and the result was simply beautiful.

The 3-D Center is open Thursday-Sunday from 1-5pm and first Thurdays from 6-9pm.

Places like this are simply awesome to have in our town. They are a big part of what makes Portland unique and they fly in the face of Generica movement.
